The first phase involves peer nominations, where lawyers nominate their peers who they believe have excelled in their practice area. The second phase involves independent research where the Super Lawyers research team evaluates the candidates based on 12 indicators of professional achievement and peer recognition.
The third phase is the peer evaluation by practice area, also known as the "blue ribbon review." During this stage, the candidates are grouped into their respective practice areas. The panelists, who are lawyers selected from those who achieved high points in the first two phases, review and rate the candidates on a scale of one to five.
The final selection is proportional, with the intent to reflect the number of attorneys in a law firm of a specific size and within an attorney's area of practice. Only the top 5% of attorneys in each state are recognized in the Super Lawyers list.
Rising Stars Category
Apart from the general Super Lawyers list, there is a category known as 'Rising Stars.' This list recognizes the top 2.5% of attorneys in each state who are either younger than 40 years old or have been practicing law for less than ten years. The selection process for the 'Rising Stars' category mirrors the rigorous Super Lawyers selection process.
